“In my artistic archive project, I am focused on the exploration, representation and organi zation of memories. In doing so, I pursue the idea of charting or documenting individual  memories in a way that makes them tangible and navigable. This includes creating a vis ual representation of memories and exploring connections to institutionalized memory or  history through archives or landmarks, among others.

During my residency in New York, I am tracing the paths of the Hungarian-Jewish communities in New York, conducting research in archives, libraries, and meeting with individuals  such as Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor Dr. Zahava Szász Stessel. Dr. Stessel was  forced to work in an external camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp near my home town of Leipzig in 1944/45 and now resides in New York.

To complement the theme, I am offering bookbinding workshops where everyone can par ticipate and bring their own book ideas to life. Participation is free, and materials will be  provided. No prior experience is necessary.”

Mandy Gehrt is an artist in residency from Germany at ISCP. She has exhibited work at Artwall Gallery, Czech Republic; Kultur Leioa Auditorium, Spain; and Museo Rautenstrauch-Joest, Germany, among others.
