Seal the Fog, Again showcases Yulin Gu and Sha Luo’s first collaborative project as an artist duo, exploring how cruelty wraps itself in innocence through two of their childhood games: Ring Toss and Balloon Shooting. Here, players would win prizes by throwing rings and bursting balloons. In China, the prizes would often cruelly include small live animals such as rabbits, cats, and birds. The joy of ‘winning’ the animals depended on accurately bursting balloons, encouraging destruction and conquest to win rewards.

These games were part of Yulin and Sha’s childhood and cultural experiences. As they reflect on these games today, feelings of encapsulation and detachment arise. Seal the Fog, Again represents these feelings using ready-made/found objects, ceramics, glass, and other materials, creating new “game prizes” that are broken and fragile. Their work acts as a restoration and reconstruction of an ended game. Here and now, prizes are only to be seen, rather than continued to be played with. Our friendship started in 2023 with a two-person exhibition Seal the Fog, curated by Yindi Chen at Tutu Gallery. Over time, we found ourselves naturally confiding in each other, and now our creative collaboration has become a symbiotic relationship. Our working relationship is similar to playing Sunday morning basketball at Chinatown Basketball Club - clumsy at times, but always supportive and encouraging.

Yulin Gu @little9173 is an artist based in Jackson Heights who’s work from photography and sculpture. Yulin is intrigued by the gap between urban transformations and urban stillness, and her work portrays expanded personal experiences and collective memories. Yulin explores the imaginative potential of ready-made objects, offering captivating insights into the evolving urban landscape.

Sha Luo @shaluo__ currently lives with Yoyo the bunny and Gogo the cat in Brooklyn. She explores the ambiguity between truth and lies, as well as the perception of tension and intimacy, materializing the entangled relations between sensations and memories through photography, video, installation, and performance.
